Your home is the one place where you and your whole family feel safe, so it’s important that everyone is clued up on the basics of home security and safety. According to details found in previous results for the Crime Survey for England and Wales (CSEW), a burglary happens every 40 seconds in the UK and 1 in 4 victims have been targeted more than once.

If you want to avoid being a part of this statistics, you need to up your security around your home as a practical measure, but also teach your children about home security too. Ensuring that the whole family is well versed in the basics of security means children will begin to learn how to look after themselves and the home, and parents will feel more confident in their children.

Teaching your children about home security doesn’t need to be scary. It’s important that you don’t overwhelm them with information and instead teach them small, easy lessons that they can remember.

In this blog we explain all you need to know about educating your children on home security.

Why do children need to learn about home safety?

Children need to be educated on all types of safety and security, from crossing the road to keeping the house safe. Home security might not seem as much as a danger for children as online safety or fire safety, for example, but it is equally as important. Without the right knowledge how will they know what to look out for?

Spotting dangers

If your home security is compromised and you aren’t home, your children will not know how to deal with the situation if you haven’t taught them. As your kids get older and they begin to spend more time at home alone, it’s sensible to educate them on the possible dangers they need to look out for such as open front doors, strangers visiting the house and anything else that looks suspicious.

Confidence

Not only does learning how to stay safe increase your confidence but it can make your children feel more comfortable at home too. As mentioned, there may be occasions when your child is going to be home alone which can be a little nerve wracking. However, knowing how to keep the home secure will boost their confidence and independence.

Life lessons

Teaching your children about safety and security from a young age means they’ll be well equipped as they get older and think about moving out. Most teenagers' first experience of living alone is at university where they’ll be in shared halls or a student house. By the time this comes round your child will feel a lot better about entering this new stage, and knowing how to keep themselves safe is a big part of this.

Top things to teach your children about security

There are lots of things around the home that need to be kept secure that your children can help with. Remember, it’s their home too so it's down to everyone and take responsibility for keeping the whole family safe. Here we explain some of the top things you can teach them about keeping your property safe.

Keys and codes

For many children their one of their first responsibilities around home security is getting their first key. This is a big step for a child so always think about this properly before organising key duplication as your child might not be ready. When you do decide to give them a key there are a few things they should know. Firstly, keys should be kept in a safe place when out and about and never in an obvious place such as under the doormat. Secondly, your address should not be written on the key as this information can fall into the wrong hands. Lastly, always encourage your children to let you know when they’ve lost their key so you can change the locks or have another one cut.

Opening the door

Children should always be wary when opening the front door. It’s important that they never let strangers into the house, especially when they are home alone. Always enforce the rule that they should not open the door when they are home alone or to look out of the window to see who is knocking on the door before opening it. Alternatively, if you are home they should also come to you to answer the door.

If you’d like to upgrade your front door security, here at Guardian Security we have a range of mechanical locks. If you’re unsure about which product is best for you, our professional team is more than happy to talk you through our products and find a security system installation that suits your needs.

Being careful on social media

The majority of teenagers have at least one social media account where they post pictures and videos to share with their friends. However, as children should know as part of their online safety, you don’t always know who’s following you online which means they could easily find out your personal information.

When it comes to home security, make sure your children are not sharing home details online such as your address, pictures of your home or even images of your valuable items such as jewellery, consoles and money. Many burglars find out about possible targets through these platforms when people unintentionally expose their details, for example, letting people know that you’re going on holiday.

Locking items away

Taking responsibility for where their items are kept is an easy way of teaching children about home security. For example, if your child rides their bike to school or uses it around the home, then they need to learn how to put it away properly too. Leaving bikes and other possessions in the middle of the driveway can be tempting to thieves and it shows that you don’t care about keeping your property secure. Show them how to use bike locks, open and lock the garage safely and other safe locations where they can store their items so they aren’t at risk.

What to do in an emergency situation?

One of the most important security measures your children need to know is what to do in an emergency situation. If your child hears someone trying to gain access, they could be putting themselves in danger if they do take action. The best thing they can do is go to a safe place, whether that’s in a room with a locked door or out of the house if they can do so safely. They should then call 999 and alert the police about what’s happening or call you or another trusted adult.

According to the Driving and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) in 2019 52,288 cars were stolen in the UK – that’s one every nine minutes. But despite those shocking statistics, many of us still don’t take vehicle security measures at home, at work or when out and about. Your vehicle is one of the most valuable assets you own, so why spend all that money if you’re not going to take care of it?

Every year criminals become more and more sophisticated in their methods of robbery, with hi-tech and non-invasive techniques making it easy for your car to be stolen right under your nose! Therefore, it’s essential that you’re one step ahead with high-quality solutions and good home security measures in mind.

If you need help improving the security of your car, this blog will help. We’ve put together a detailed guide as to how you can keep your vehicle safe and reduce the chances of break-ins, damage or theft.

Home security vehicle safety tips

Your home should be the one place where you feel safe, however, this is a prime location for criminal activity. The last thing you want is for your vehicle to be stolen while you’re at home, as this could lead to repeat criminal activity that puts you in danger. Here are some of the top security measures that you can follow to protect your vehicle.

Secure the perimeter

If criminals and opportunists cannot get on to your property then they’re going to have a hard time removing your vehicle. Installing a gate or good fencing is an easy way of deterring criminals. When people are looking to commit a crime they often choose an area that’s easy to navigate as this improves their chances of not getting caught, but if you have a clear barrier in the way the likelihood of success is slim.

Furthermore, many criminals will scout out an area before returning later so if your car is on full display they’ll already have their eyes on the target. Securing the perimeter of your home prevents the very first steps of criminal activity from happening, even motion lighting is a good way of showing people that you have measures in place.

Install access control

Most homeowners will hang their car keys on a key hook or on a table near the front door and while this is convenient for you in the morning it’s also easy for intruders to grab. To prevent this you should always keep your keys in a place that isn't easy to snatch but access control can help too. Door entry systems that require a code or card are much easier to break into than regular key locks so criminals will not be able to get into your home and grab your keys or anything else. Thieves are more likely to avoid your property if you have a high standard of security so never overlook the importance of good locks and access control.

Improve your vehicle locks

Did you know that you can reinforce the locks on your vehicle? If someone tries to pick the lock and manages to get in that could mean your car or van is gone forever. However, there are advanced car locks available that can keep your vehicle extra secure, especially for owners of vans with tools, as these are one of the most common targets for thieves.

At Guardian Security, our Mul-T-Lock ArmaDLock has a unique locking system that comes with an ID code card and double sided key. It acts as both a visual deterrent and practical solutions for added security of the vehicle and the items inside. Resistant to picking and drills, our team can install the system promptly. Workplace vehicle safety tips

If you own a business and have a company car park, it’s important that you and your staff feel comfortable parking your vehicle in this area. Vehicle theft doesn’t just happen at home it can happen at work too so ensure that you don’t get too complacent and completely forget about vehicle safety. Here are some top things that you can do.

Install car barriers

A great way of preventing unwanted guests from getting close to your car park is to install car park barriers. These will keep people out when your business is closed and help you keep a better eye on the comings and goings of the area. Some barriers require a swipe card or card to be lifted, which means your car cannot be removed from the carpark by criminals.

Compared to manual gates where you have to get out of your car to open them, electronic options are much safer as an opportunist could be waiting for you to leave your vehicle before jumping in the driver's seat! There are many solutions to suit your workplace no matter how big or small it is, so get in touch with a professional security team for a high-quality installation.

Remove valuable items

Never leave valuable items in your vehicle as they can be easily spotted and stolen. Purses, wallets, jewellery and electricals should be kept in the glove compartment or removed completely as you could end up with smashed windows or other vehicle damage. This is particularly important if you are parking on the street so your vehicle is exposed.

Other top tips

●     Don’t park in secluded areas - When out and about, don’t park your vehicle in vulnerable areas such as secluded or poorly lit roads. If criminals are less likely to be seen they are more likely to commit a crime so don’t give them the opportunity.

●     Lock the doors and close the windows - It sounds obvious, but you must ensure that your vehicle’s windows and doors are properly locked before walking away. Don’t be tempted to leave your windows down even if you’re just popping somewhere for a few minutes - it only takes the same amount of time for your car to be robbed!

●     Replace car keys - If you lose your car keys it may be a good idea to have a new set made instead of using the spare one - you never know who could have grabbed your keys waiting for a time to take your car.
